Tobacco Free Michigan's "Building Stronger Communities" Conference

July 17 Okemos, MI

The 2024 annual conference returns as an in-person event with the theme of Building Stronger Communities.  The conference is a great opportunity to meet other TFM members and learn about what is happening around the state and around the country regarding tobacco and nicotine trends.

The 2024 Annual Conference included four presentations featuring and exciting lineup of speakers and topics including:

Smoke-Free Housing: Pat McKone has worked on smoke-free housing for over 20 years.  She will share her experiences in Wisconsin and Minnesota with the American Lung Association.  Topics will include why smoke-free housing matters, potential pitfalls and resources available.

Tobacco and Trauma: Alena Williams will share her teams work at the University of Michigan around addressing the challenges that arise when people turn to nicotine for "help" when dealing with traumatic experiences.

Building Coalitions: Minou Jones (Making It Count), Ruth Schwendinger (Michigan Prevention Network) and Kaitlin Hermanson (KnowSmoke) all lead three different coalitions and will lead a panel discussion about the challenges and opportunities they encounter.

Policy for Change:  Ken Fletcher will provide an update on recent policy changes and an analysis of how policy can be used to reduce the impact of tobacco on public health.
